Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate – 10/2/17

Statement Issued by the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East

 Damascus, February 9, 2017

The so-called Rev. Yuhanon Aydin is not a priest in the Syriac Orthodox Church and his so-called ordination is void because it is not done by the proper ecclesiastical authority.

Based on Article 70 a) of the Constitution of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch: “a Metropolitan shall have no right to interfere in an Archdiocese that does not belong to him. Moreover, he is not allowed to perform church services in it unless permitted by the head of that Archdiocese and with his consent.

Also, if he performs any ordinations there, they are considered void, and the matter will be referred to H. H. the Patriarch”. Therefore, the ordination that took place in Brussels – Belgium on the evening of Thursday February 9, 2017 of the so-called Rev. Yuhanon Aydin is void because it was not done by the proper episcopal authority, authorized to perform such an ordination, who is exclusively His Eminence Archbishop Mor George Kourieh, Patriarchal Vicar of the Archdiocese-Patriarchal Vicariate of Belgium, France and Luxemburg, even though the Patriarchate had warned from the consequences of such an illegal and unconstitutional action a day before it took place.

His Holiness the Patriarch directs the members of the Archdiocese-Patriarchal Vicariate of Belgium, France, and Luxemburg, and the faithful throughout the world not to consider or deal with the so-called Rev. Yuhanon Aydin as a priest for he is forbidden from practicing priesthood.

Statement-Feb-10-2017-En-3-2

Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate – 10/2/17

Statement Issued by the Fathers of the Holy Synod of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch

February 10, 2017

A statement was issued by six archbishops of our Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch (four of whom are members in the Holy Synod and two are not) in which they attacked His Holiness our Patriarch, “the Supreme Head of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch, the defender of its faith, doctrine, and apostolic traditions, the symbol of its unity, its representative and spokesman everywhere, the general supervisor of all its affairs, and the spiritual father of all Syrian Orthodox people worldwide.” (Article 7 of the Church Constitution) and questioned, in particular, the faith of His Holiness and his adherence to the Orthodox Christian dogma, and permitted themselves to speak on behalf of the Holy Synod declaring their rebellion against Church leadership and Constitution, considering His Holiness an alien to the rank of Patriarch.

We confirm in this statement that carries our names, the following:

Our utter condemnation and absolute rejection of everything that appeared in the referenced statement in the form of accusations against our Patriarch, which are hereby declared totally false and hostile positions that incite discord and sow the seeds of division among our people.
Our clear declaration that these six archbishops do not, in any way, represent our Holy Synod nor do they speak for any of us.

We consider invalid and illegal every and any action that these archbishops conduct in the form of ordinations and any other episcopal services that, contrary to the Constitution of the Church, are carried out without securing the approval of His Holiness the Patriarch (Article 50 – Section H, which states: “All of his [the Metropolitan] activities are subject to the supervision of H.H the Patriarch”, and Article 56, which states: “The Metropolitan will be vigilant in choosing the best priests whom he ordains, according to church rules and traditions after obtaining approval from H.H. the Patriarch”). By their actions, in disobedience of these laws, they are separating themselves from the Church.

Our clear call to these six archbishops to follow the path of repentance and for their return from their deviation, subject to the Church canon law in accordance with the Constitution of our Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch.

The fathers of the Synod confirm their standing by the side of the lawful successor of St. Peter, His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, who was chosen by the Holy Spirit through his election by the Holy Synod in these difficult circumstances that we are currently witnessing. ܕܗܘ ܐܦܪܝܡ ܬܪܝܢܐ ܡ̄

We extend our apostolic benediction, benevolent prayers and greetings to our brethren, His Beatitude Mor Baselius Thomas I, Catholicos of India, and their Eminences the Metropolitans; our spiritual children: Very Reverend Corepiscopoi, Reverend priests, monks, nuns, deacons and deaconesses and the entire blessed Syriac Orthodox people throughout the world. May the divine providence embrace them through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and St. Peter, Chief of the Apostles, and the rest of the Martyrs and Saints. Amen.

“For great is His steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.” (Psalms 117: 2)

Dearly beloved in Christ,

At the beginning of the Great Lent, let us walk in the footsteps of the Lord, and withdraw ourselves to our spiritual desert, to seek solitude and think about the purpose and mission of our lives. When we meditate the greatness of God’s faithfulness towards us and the salvation He offered us, we go beyond the materialistic things and strive for the Kingdom of God and His righteousness (cf. Matthew 6: 33; Luke 12: 31), remembering His life-giving words: “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4: 4).

How great is Lent! It is “a weapon against the evil one and a shield which receives the arrows of the adversary” (Aphrahat, Demonstration 3). Through lent, we prepare ourselves to meet the Crucified One at Golgotha, to bow down in front of the Holy Cross and to ponder upon His salvific passion, so that we might die with Him and live with Him (cf. II Timothy 2: 11). Hence, we can proclaim with the Prophet David: “Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds, your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your judgments are like the great deep.” (Psalms 36: 5-6).

Dearly beloved, on this Great Lent, let us meditate the faithfulness of the Lord towards us, Who is the keeper of faith forever (cf. Psalms 146: 6), and His faithfulness is firm and endures in the heavens from generation to generation, because He will never be false to His faithfulness (Psalms 89: 2, 33; Psalms 119: 90), and “if we are faithless, He remains faithful – for He cannot deny Himself.” (II Timothy 2: 13).

The faithfulness of “the faithful God” is revealed when He is ever mindful of His covenant and grace to those who love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generation (cf. Deuteronomy 7: 9 and Psalms 111: 5). He fulfills His promises and does not turn back from them (cf. Psalms 132: 11). Certainly, the greatest manifestation of His faithfulness is shown on the cross where salvation and remission of sins were given, because God is “faithful and just, He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (I John 1: 9).

We look back at our long human history, with our successes and failures, kindness and wickedness, faithfulness and unfaithfulness; in order to learn indispensable lessons which help us throughout our journey on this earth, walking blamelessly in the Lord’s path with watchfulness and faithfulness. The Lord Himself speaks about watchfulness and faithfulness in a series of parables that begin with the parable of the faithful servant, then the virgins, the talents until He finally sets the stage for the great day of judgement where the faithful and righteous will go to eternal life and the wicked will go away to the eternal punishment (cf. Matthew 24 and 25).

We have, therefore, to lead a life that pleases the Lord and follow His commandments, so that we may grow and come closer to holiness (I Thessalonians 4: 1-2), and not become negligent, but be diligent in proclaiming the word of God faithfully (cf. Jeremiah 23: 28) refusing “to practice cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth” (II Corinthians 4: 2).

We contemplate today on the suffering of our church in the Middle East, a church which is doubtlessly the first servant of the Gospel, and the faithful witness in preaching the Good News to the entire world, where we encounter the example of a true Christian, St. Stephen, Head of the deacons and Protomartyr, who followed the teachings of the Lord, forgave the trespasses of his stoners and remained faithful till death and was granted the crown of life (cf. Acts 7, Revelation 2: 10).

We invite you, dearly beloved members of the Church in the homeland, to remain steadfast till the end (cf. Matthew 24: 12). We feel with you and share in your pain and suffering, and hope to rejoice with you soon (cf. Romans 12: 15). We ask the Lord God to shorten these days (cf. Matthew 24: 22) and to wipe every tear from your eyes (cf. Revelation 21: 4), so that peace and security may return to our countries in the Middle East, especially in Iraq and Syria, the land of the forefathers. We also pray for the return of the two abducted Archbishops of Aleppo, their Eminences Boulos Yaziji and Mor Gregorius Youhanna Ibrahim, who paid the price of their faithfulness and watchfulness over their flocks by sacrificing their own freedom.

Likewise, we look at our church in the diaspora, while it is growing and multiplying quickly because of the immigration of our persecuted children, we recognize that the church faces persecution of a different kind in these countries also. The challenges facing our church in her strive to remain faithful to her Lord and to His teachings are tremendous. However, we have heroes of faith who can inspire the faithful in their spiritual struggle. We have Joseph who remained faithful to his god in the land of Egypt, refusing to go astray from the straight path and stating openly: “How then could I do this great wickedness, and sin against God” (Genesis 39: 9), and the Lord God made him fruitful in the land of his misfortunes (cf. Genesis 41: 52).

We also see the Prophet Daniel who remained faithful to his god in the land of his captivity and observed the fasts (cf. Daniel 1: 8). He surpassed the ministers in the kingdom because he was virtuous and faithful, and refused to abandon the worship of his god by worshipping King Darius. The Lord God rewarded his faithfulness by saving him from the devouring lions in the den and making him abundantly prosperous (cf. Daniel 6). Therefore, we urge you, dearly beloved members of our church in the diaspora, to walk blamelessly in the path of the Lord, fiercefully fighting against sin and keeping your own bodies in holiness and honor (I Thessalonians 4: 1-4), so you are not enslaved by neither money nor power nor worldly materials nor a foreign habit, rather, you hold firmly to the faith of the church and its holy tradition, keeping the love burning in your hearts towards God and your neighbor, so that you may become a living witness in the eyes of those who are outside the Church (cf. I Thessalonians 4: 12). May you become light in a world that prefers darkness over light, and salt in an earth where the salt lost its saltiness (cf. Matthew 5: 13-16 and John 3: 19).

How great is the faithfulness and loyalty of our Church in India which, for many centuries, remained faithful and steadfast in her loyalty to the Holy Throne of Saint Peter. This relationship was strengthened by the faithfulness and tireless efforts of great church fathers such as Maphriono St. Baselius Shukrallah, who visited India in the 18th century but was met with persecution and imprisonment. However, he remained faithful to his mission and encouraged the members of the church to remain steadfast in their orthodox faith; he ordained priests and deacons, and built churches, thus strengthening their ties with the Holy See of Antioch.

Today, you, beloved spiritual children in India, are being persecuted because of your loyalty and faithfulness to the Holy See of St. Peter in Antioch. We call you all to trust that “suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us.” (cf. Romans 5: 4-5). We hope that the Lord will help us put an end to the church problem, for the glory of His name, and that peace may reign again in our Church in India.

In this regard, we cannot overlook the small but significant church which is in every family; we contemplate the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and Joseph, who were entrusted by God with His Only Son, and they protected Him from every harm (cf. Matthew 2: 13-23), and raised Him according to the law of the Lord (cf. Luke 2: 21-51). We call upon married couples to faithfully keep their holy marital vows, and be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ (cf. Ephesians 5: 21); thus be able to depict the icon of Christ and of the Church in this world. We also commend the fathers and mothers to faithfully raise their children, teaching them the principles of faith since their early childhood. They shall protect them from strange doctrines and spoiling habits, educate them to be steadfast in their faith, and teach them to observe the fasts and to love prayer and be honest and loving, so that they become holy in all their conduct, because God Who called them is holy (cf. I Peter 1: 15). We, likewise, urge the children to renounce the world or the things in the world, and to do the will of God and live forever (I John 2: 15 and 17). Thus, the family proclaims together: “as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24: 15).

Our beloved priests in their various ranks as well as the monks, nuns and deacons, may Mor Severus the Great be a model of faithfulness for all of us, as we are commemorating this year the 1500th Jubilee of his exile to Egypt. He firmly held to the orthodox faith and remained watchful over the Church of Antioch and administered it for 20 years from his exile in Egypt. We exhort you to guard the good treasure entrusted to you (II Timothy 1: 14). May the priests – servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries, be found trustworthy in their priestly ministry (cf. I Corinthians 4: 1-2), watchful over their parishes, and preserving the commandments and the doctrines of the Church. May the monks and nuns be faithful to their monastic vows, continuously seeking holiness and perfection. May the deacons “hold fast to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience” (I Timothy 3: 9).

Dearly beloved,

At the beginning of the Great Lent, we encourage you to remain faithful in prayer and fasting, as well as in reading the special Scripture readings selected by the Church for this holy period. We commend you to be faithful in almsgiving, remembering the widow who put all she had in the treasury of the temple (Mark 12: 41-44; Luke 21: 1-4). We encourage you to do charity and show love to all people, so that you may be a reflection of the image of the Good Master who came to serve and not to be served (cf. Matthew 20: 28; Mark 10: 45). Here is how Mor Jacob of Sarough describes the serving Lord in one of his poems, saying:

“the Physician came down and walked on earth, and healed its diseases; He removed the illnesses, healed the wounds and drove away evil spirits.

He casted out demons, healed disorders and cleansed the leper; He opened [the eyes of] the blind and offered good health to the sick.

He turned water into good wine and the people drank; He multiplied the bread to the multitudes in the wilderness and thousands became full.

With His garment, He stopped the bleeding of the woman; He gave life to the Samaritan woman when she met Him.

He casted out the demon from the [daughter of the] Canaanite woman; and forgave the sins of the sinner woman who came to Him.

He made the crippled woman’s back straight; and gave forgiveness of sins and healing to the paralytic.

He willed and the leper was cleansed from his uncleanliness; with mud, He opened [the eyes of] the blind and he saw light.

He healed the possessed blind and mute; on the road, He raised the dead one and brought him back to his mother.

He saved the young girl from the mouth of death and returned her to her father; He called Lazarus after he stenched, and he came out [of the tomb].”

(Mimro 29, Ed. 2017)

May the Lord accept your fasting, repentance, prayers and almsgiving. May He make you worthy to celebrate joyfully the Feast of the Resurrection, and may He have mercy on the souls of the faithful departed, through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, St. Peter, Chief of the Apostles, St. Severus of Antioch and the rest of the martyrs and saints. May God bless you. ܘܐܒܘܢ ܕܒܫܡܝܐ ܘܫܪܟܐ

Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate – Official Fb Page of the Patriarch of Antioch  – 14/10/18

Statement Issued by the Fathers of the Holy Synod of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch Patriarchal Residence – Atchaneh, Bikfaya – Lebanon October 12, 2018.

Upon the invitation of His Holiness Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East and Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, the Holy Synod of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch held a regular session at the Patriarchal Residence in Atchaneh, Bikfaya – Lebanon, on October 9-12, 2018, with the participation of all its members.

His Holiness the Patriarch inaugurated the Holy Synod by celebrating the Divine Liturgy at Mor Severus Church. In his sermon, His Holiness welcomed all the Fathers participating in the Holy Synod. Together, they prayed for the Holy Church and her children, asking the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit for all the members of the Holy Synod, for the good of the Church and the faithful. His Holiness also prayed for the safe return of the two abducted Archbishops of Aleppo Mor Gregorius Youhanna Ibrahim and Boulos Yaziji, beseeching the Lord that they return safely soon to their Churches.

During a visit of the Fathers of the Holy Synod to His Excellency General Michel Aoun, President of the Republic of Lebanon, on Tuesday 9/10/2018, His Holiness the Patriarch hoped for peace and prosperity in Lebanon, appreciating its message of love, fellowship and openness, and hoping for the formation of a new government which meets the aspirations of the noble Lebanese people and takes into account the participation of all confessional denominations, including the minorities.

In the inaugural session, after prayer and invocation of the Holy Spirit, the Fathers of the Holy Synod discussed the various topics and issues listed on the agenda; they listened to a special report from His Holiness the Patriarch about his major visits, meetings and executed projects since the last meeting of the Holy Synod. Reports were submitted about the various Patriarchal departments: Financial Department, Department of Syriac Studies, Media Department, Suryoyo Patriarchal Youth Department. Moreover, they were informed of the projects accomplished by the Patriarchate since the last synod; the most important of these are: Antioch Syrian University, Suboro TV, the Holy Cross Monastery, Melkart Pharmaceutical Factory, Little Angel House Orphanage, Syriac Cultural Center, Kindergarten, etc…

The Fathers discussed the situation of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch in India, especially following the disastrous flood that hit the state of Kerala a few weeks ago, resulting in great human and material losses. They stressed the need for our Church throughout the world to stand by the side of the victims of the flood in India. The Fathers also decided to take some actions concerning the problem with the other faction in India which exists since the beginning of the last century.

The Fathers also listened to some reports about the Syriac dioceses in the Middle East and the diaspora. They discussed several pastoral issues, majorly: the date of celebrating the Resurrection, the Great Lent, god-parenthood in the Church, etc… In addition, they studied some reports on the ecumenical work of our Church.

In a serious note, the Fathers studied thoroughly the topic of the emigration of our Syriac people from the Middle East, especially from Iraq and Syria, and discussed the ways to reduce it by supporting our people to stay firm in the land of their forefathers by all available means, mainly by rebuilding the destroyed houses, creating productive and developmental projects that will provide job opportunities to the faithful of our Church, in addition to helping the refugees in Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan. The Fathers also stressed the necessity of taking care of new emigrants in the diaspora and assisting them in integrating in the Syriac parishes and churches, in order to help them to preserve their religious and cultural identity.

Furthermore, the Fathers discussed the case of the two abducted Archbishops of Aleppo Mor Gregorius Youhanna Ibrahim and Boulos Yaziji, and were informed of the latest developments in this respect; the Fathers expressed their startling at the suspicious silence and the indifference of the international community overshadowing this cause. They appealed to all nations, international organizations, and the people with goodwill to spend all effort for the safe return of the Archbishops as well as all the kidnapped and missing people.

The Fathers welcomed the efforts spent on eradicating terrorism from Syria, and aiming at reaching a political resolution for the long-standing crisis. They drew hope from the positive developments in Syria and called for the lifting of the unjust and illegal siege on the Syrian people, and the restoration of security and safety in the country, as well as the return of all its citizens to it. The Fathers stressed the importance of building a civil society based on the foundations of freedom, justice and democracy, based on a constitution that ensures the unity of the country, and is rooted on the coexistence between its various components.

In this regard, the Fathers showed great interest in the case of the Syriac schools in Al-Jazeera, and the recent violations and infringements that took place there. They denounced the attempts aiming at imposing a new reality that contradicts the convictions most of the faithful of the Church and the citizens of the country. They stressed on the importance of mutual respect among the various components of the region.

The Fathers welcomed the recent agreements in Iraq leading to the election of a President, the Speaker of Parliament and the assignment of a new Prime Minister. They prayed hoping that these developments will be reflected positively on the entire Iraqi people. They expressed their content at the return of a great part of our people to their villages and towns in the Nineveh Plain. The Fathers also prayed for the Palestinian people who are under occupation, as well as for peace in the entire region.

Finally, the Fathers beseeched God to preserve His Holy Church, and all her faithful everywhere, hoping that they will enjoy peaceful times, and calling them all to pray for their mother Church and her pastors, that God may keep them, and “be in the midst of her, so that she shall not be moved” (Psalms 46: 5).

Syriac Orthodox Patriarchate – 2/11/18

Anglican–Oriental Orthodox International Commission Communiqué 2018

The Anglican–Oriental Orthodox International Commission held its seventh meeting from 22–26 October 2018 at the Syriac Orthodox Patriarchal Residence, Atchaneh, Lebanon.

The Commission greatly appreciated the generous hospitality of His Holiness Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, and the kindness of the sisters of the Mor Jacob Baradeus Convent, and all those assisting His Holiness.

The Commission noted with deep sadness the recent passing of one of its founder-members and its former Oriental Orthodox Co-Chair, His Eminence Metropolitan Bishoy of Damietta. The Commission gave thanks for his contribution to Anglican–Oriental Orthodox relations, and for his leadership in the ecumenical movement. The Commission offered prayers for the repose of his soul, and continues to hold his diocese in its prayers.

The Procession and Work of the Holy Spirit, the agreed statement of the 2017 meeting of the Commission, was published in October 2018. It is dedicated to Metropolitan Bishoy,

‘monk, bishop, theologian, champion of the Orthodox faith and unity of the Church’.

The members of the Commission welcome the unanimous elections, by its Oriental Orthodox members, of His Eminence Archbishop Angaelos of London as the new Oriental Orthodox Co-Chair and of the Very Revd Dr Roger Akhrass as the new Oriental Orthodox Co-Secretary.

The Commission resumed its work on Authority in the Church, with papers on bishops and synods (councils), and the Ecumenical Councils. It seeks to draw on established ecumenical agreements in the framework of this Commission, and the distinctive characteristics of the two families of Churches. The Commission hopes to finalize and make available the fruits of its work on Ecumenical Councils in 2019.

The Commission was received in audiences by His Holiness, Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, and His Holiness Catholicos Aram I of the Holy See of Cilicia, in which they both spoke about the present critical situation of Christians in the Middle East, particularly on difficulties in Iraq and Syria.

The Commission was acutely mindful that its meeting took place in Lebanon, itself home to over a million of refugees from war and conflict in the region. The Commission holds before the wider oikumene the costly witness of the Churches in this country, offered in love and service to the dispossessed and the victims of war.

The members of the Commission assured Their Holinesses that their prayers would be matched by concrete actions, visible support and solidarity on the part of their respective Churches. In particular, the urgent need for pastoral and ecumenical visits to Syria is vital at this time, and Churches in both families are strongly encouraged to respond in this way. Both Co-Chairs pledged themselves to facilitate such a visit in the near future, as a concrete sign of the faith, trust in and love and for the people who have remained in Syria, at considerable danger to themselves throughout the period of war.

The Commission realises that its own theological work requires the practical expression of love as an outworking of the theological convergence already discerned around Christology and the Holy Spirit. Members of the Commission recognise that it is no longer a question of speaking of the Churches of ‘the East’ or of ‘the West’, as we have become truly global communities. Moreover, today we experience one another in different regional contexts and share together in Christian witness and civic engagement in a wide range of countries where Anglicans and Oriental Orthodox are living together.

In the course of the meeting, members of the Commission had the opportunity to encounter local Christians, which included visits to the Monastery of St Maron, Annaya, where they were welcomed by the Abbot and brothers of the Lebanese Maronite Order, and to the Armenian Theological Seminary, Bikfaya, where students were introduced to the work of the Commission, and had the opportunity to ask questions about the Anglican tradition.

The members of the Commission continue to hold in their prayers the two bishops of Aleppo abducted in April 2013, Metropolitan Mor Gregorios Youhanna Ibrahim of the Syriac Orthodox Church, and Metropolitan Boulos Yazigi of the Greek (Rüm) Orthodox Church of Antioch.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Commission thanks the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for the mutual understanding and friendship that has been experienced and shared, and looks forward to continuing its work.

The Anglican–Oriental Orthodox International Commission held its eighth meeting from the 28th of October to the 1st of November 2019 at All Saints Anglican Cathedral, Cairo, Egypt.

The Commission greatly appreciated the generous hospitality of the Rt Rev’d Dr Mouneer Anis, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese in Egypt with North Africa and the Horn of Africa, and the Rt Rev’d Dr. Samy Shehata, Area Bishop in North Africa.

Following its agreed agenda for the official dialogue, the Commission resumed its work on “Authority in the Church”, which was begun in Dublin, Ireland in 2017 and continued at Atchaneh, Lebanon in 2018.

The draft agreed statement on “The Inheritance of Ecumenical Councils” was reviewed and amended. The meeting discussed new procedures on the reception of ecumenical texts adopted by the Anglican Communion and offered comments on them. The Commission further considered its work program for the year ahead, with the intention of bringing the agreed statement on “Ecumenical Councils” to fruition at the next meeting. Papers on “Bishops and Synods” were presented, representing the next stage in the agreed agenda, drawing on existing ecumenical agreements, while preserving the distinctive characteristics of this dialogue.

The Commission was received in audience and for dinner by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark, in which he blessed and encouraged the ecumenical dialogue. He explained the unity of the Church as a symbolic cross with the four aspects of love, study, dialogue and prayer with Christ at its centre. His Holiness depicted the unity of the Egyptian people using the geographical form of the River Nile and its Delta as a praying figure with outstretched arms. The Commission was also received by Bishop Mouneer in his office and discussed its work with him and thanked him for his hospitality.

The Commission was particularly mindful that its meeting took place in Cairo, itself home to thousands of refugees from war and conflict in the region. The diaconal work of the Coptic Orthodox and Anglican Churches in Egypt was experienced by members of the Commission who visited the transformational work of the Coptic Orthodox Church with the Zabballeen (rubbish collectors) in the community and church in the District of Moqattam Mountain. The Commission also attended a presentation by Dr Maged Moussa, General Manager of Episcocare Egypt, a non-profit organization that constitutes the foundation for the care of Episcopal Social Services in Egypt. The members were made aware of the vision and mission of the work with some of the most marginalised communities and met workers and recipients of the programme, including Refuge Egypt, which offers healthcare, education and other meaningful support to the thousands of refugees who are embraced by the care of the Anglican Church in Egypt.

In response to two of the major crises facing our world –the degradation of the natural environment and the resulting mass movement of people- the Coptic Orthodox Church and the Anglican Church in Egypt have both responded with vision and compassion. The work of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Mokattam centres around pastoral care for the inhabitants of the area, pioneering the recycling of waste and embodying careful stewardship of the environment. The work of the Anglican Church amongst refugees is similarly a local manifestation of the Churches’ response to the worldwide refugee crisis.

The Commission is drawn from many different countries and cultures and represents Churches which are global in their expression and outreach. In this global context, the challenges that face all our Churches are similar. It was both inspiring and encouraging to share and hear news of our Churches and communities around the world, and to hold one another in prayers of thanksgiving and support for all that God calls us to do for His world.

The Commission was genuinely heartened to receive news that the United States House of Representatives has passed with overwhelming majority resolution 296 that recognises the Armenian genocide.

As we meet, we hold in our prayers those who have suffered violence in Oromia, Ethiopia including our sisters and brothers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church, praying repose for the departed, comfort for the grieving and support for all those impacted.

The Commission gave thanks for the opportunity of working and praying together in an ever-closer spirit of unity and love. The members of the Commission prayed for peace in the region, continuing to hold in their prayers the two bishops of Aleppo who were abducted in April 2013, Metropolitan Mor Gregorios Youhanna Ibrahim of the Syriac Orthodox Church, and Metropolitan Boulos Yazigi of the Greek (Rüm) Orthodox Church of Antioch. The members of the Commission renewed their pledge to facilitate a fraternal, pastoral and ecumenical visit to Syria as soon as possible.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Commission thanks the Triune God, Father, Son, and

Holy Spirit, for the mutual understanding, fellowship and friendship that has been experienced and deepened and looks forward to the future in hope.
